Teacher overrides, Mark Download Type, and Group Manager mark downloads
These notes are only relevant to teachers and group managers that are in a group using system integration.
In addition to specifying the generally desired mark output types when requesting a mark download file,
group managers can override the mark types requested via the post on a section by section basis via the
Sections screen. If a section has a
download type other than "Unspecified",
MyGradeBook will
supply that type of value in the various mark columns for the students in that
section when the group manager requests a download regardless of what what was generally specified at the time of your
download request. For example, the group manager may have requested an Alpha download when posting to
MyGradeBook but one of the sections was specifically assigned a numeric download type
so the rows in the downloaded file for that section will have numeric mark values.
Teacher overrides can also override what is normally provided as the Grading Period Mark
for a student. For example, if based on the combination of Grading Period Mark type specified when the group manager posted a download request
and the section specified download type the system determines that a section is supposed to download numeric marks
and the teacher in the section gave an Alpha override for a student and did not provide a numeric override,
the Grading Period Mark for the student will
in that section contain the Alpha override value.
Determining the value that will be put into the Grading Period Mark column for a student.
-
If the system determines that a section should return ALPHA grades:
-
The Grading Period Mark will always contain the computed alpha grade if no overrides are present.
If the teacher entered an alpha override, the alpha override will be used. Otherwise, the computed
alpha grade is used even if a numeric override was entered without an alpha override.
However, teachers should keep in mind that overriding the percentage makes the system recompute
the computed alpha grade based on the overridden percentage.
-
If the system determines that a section should return NUMERIC grades:
-
The Grading Period Mark will always contain the computed percentage if no overrides are present.
If the teacher entered only an alpha override, the alpha override is used.
If the teacher entered only a numeric override, the numeric override is used.
If the teacher entered only both an alpha override and a numeric override, the numeric override is used.
Example use of the Mark Download Type field by a group manager:
Most sections in "Hypothetical High School" report letter (Alpha) grades and when the group manager requests a
download of grades, Alpha grades are specified in the posted request. However, a few of the groups sections
report numeric grades with two decimal places and some report a numeric grade as a whole number. Consequently,
the group manager changed the Download Type of the sections that report
numeric grades so they have "Percentage with 2 decimal points" or "Percentage as a whole number" in the Mark Download Type field.
After the changes, requests to download "Alpha" grades will result in a file with a mixture of alpha and numeric grades
with all sections reporting alpha grades except for the few that have one of the Percentage options specified in the
Mark Download Type field.
